More about Lachine...

Lachine is a borough of the city of Montreal on the island of Montreal, in southwestern Quebec, Canada.
It is located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, west of LaSalle and next to Dorval.
Lachine was first incorporated as a village in 1848, then became a city in 1852 before being annexed by Montreal in 2010 and becoming a borough of the city. In 2016, it has a population of over 26,000.
Lachine's history dates back to 1627, when French Jesuit missionaries arrived in the area seeking to convert the First Nations people to Christianity.
The name "Lachine" comes from those early days when French explorer Robert Cavelier de La Salle named the area "Pointe-à-La Chine" because he believed that China was just beyond here (it is not). Despite his mistake, the name stuck and eventually became "Lachine".
In 1669, Sieur Louis Dillibeuf founded Lachine as we know it today - with a mill and a seigneury - after receiving land grants from King Louis XIV, making it one of the oldest European settlements in Canada.
For the next several centuries, Lachine was primarily an agricultural community producing grains such as wheat and oats, which were then shipped downstream to Montreal to be milled into flour or other products.
The construction of canal locks at Coteau-du-Lac (just upstream) in 1779 made it possible to ship goods between Montreal and Kingston without having to resort to portages around several waterfalls along the route, opening up new markets for Lachine farmers who could now reach both cities more easily with their products.
This economic growth led to increased settlement throughout southern Quebec, which brought about a variety of social, cultural and infrastructural changes in Lachine, including the construction of churches beginning in 1793 (Notre Dame de Bon Secours), the laying out and improvement of roads (Chemin du Roy), and the creation of schools (Collège André Grasset).
